Update 6:50 p.m. Thursday: U.S. Highway 40 has partially reopened to alternating traffic. The detour has been lifted.

U.S. Highway 40 is closed one mile west of Milner due to a fatal car wreck.

As of 5:50 p.m. Thursday, there was no estimated time for reopening the highway, and traffic was being detoured onto Routt County County Road 33A to C.R. 33 to C.R. 27, also known as Twentymile Road.

According to the Colorado State Patrol, the highway remained partially open immediately after the wreck, but authorities closed the road after confirming there had been a fatality.

A CSP spokesperson said two vehicles were involved in the wreck. One of the vehicles had Colorado license plates and the other had California plates.

The deceased driver was the only person riding in one of the vehicles. The other vehicle was carrying two passengers, both of whom were taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.

State patrol said the section of U.S. 40 where the incident occurred was “covered with a layer of hail” at the time of the wreck.
