Hayden police officers, teen injured during arrest following alleged burglary

Two Hayden police officers and a 16-year-old suspect sustained minor injuries Sunday afternoon when the teen was arrested following an alleged burglary at a local medical office.

Police Chief Scott Scurlock said officers received the call about the burglary at the Solandt Medical Clinic (150 Jackson Ave.) just after 2 p.m. Sunday, and subsequently discovered someone had broken into the dentist office, which was closed at the time.

Responding officers collected video evidence and fingerprints, according to a news release from the police department. Scurlock said officers spotted three suspects who matched the description of the burglars just before 4 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Chestnut Street and Jefferson Avenue.

One of the suspects, a 16-year-old boy, fled from the officers who pursued him to a gravel alley nearby, according to the police department.

The teen, whom Scurlock described as “an adult-sized 16-year-old,” and two officers suffered minor injuries during the arrest. A West Rout Fire ambulance responded to the scene, but the 16-year-old declined medical treatment.

Scurlock said officers deployed “ground control tactics” during the arrest, adding that the individuals involved suffered “scrapes and bruises” but “everybody is fine.”

“The unfortunate part of that is it took place in a gravel alley so, you get wrestling there on gravel and you tend to get hurt.”

The other two suspects, both 13-year-old girls, were taken into custody with the help of a deputy from the Routt County Sheriff’s Office and later released into the custody of their parents.

Scurlock would not comment on what was stolen, if anything, because the incident remains under investigation.

The news release said the police department was considering recommending charges of second-degree burglary, criminal mischief, obstructing government operations and for a minor in possession of marijuana. Scurlock said the 16-year-old “is looking at all of the charges,” but the two girls “may only face the burglary and mischief charges.”

On Monday, the police chief said his department had not yet forwarded the recommended charges to the district attorney’s office because police were “still making the determination of what to send over based upon involvement.”
