Craig previous offender denied lower bond

The Moffat County case against a previous offender with more than 60 prior arrests in the state was denied a lower bond after his public defender requested an $80,000 decrease during a Friday bond hearing.

Dustin Hyatt, 48, of Craig, was arrested Sept. 19 and charged with unlawful distribution of meth, a Class 1 drug felony, as well as 14 counts of possession of weapons by a previous offender, three counts of possession of an illegal weapon and one special offender charge, which could increase the severity of penalties.

On Sept. 19, law enforcement officers with the All Crimes Enforcement Team searched Hyatt’s residence on West 6th Street in Craig.

The All Crimes Enforcement Team, consisting of officers from the Routt and Moffat county sheriff’s offices and the Steamboat, Craig and Hayden police departments, aims to “target the illegal possession and distribution of controlled substances and other crimes associated with these activities,” according to the All Crimes Enforcement Team agreement and memorandum of understanding.

Over 300 grams of meth were found in Hyatt’s residence during the search. Law enforcement also found a total of 14 weapons, including four firearms, three metallic knuckles, five compound bows, one “homemade double-ended knife” longer than 3.5 inches and one collapsible baton, according to the arrest affidavit.

As of March — when he was arrested for allegedly taking photos of women in a Steamboat Springs restaurant bathroom — Hyatt had been arrested 59 times in Colorado since 1998, according to criminal history records provided by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

As of Sept. 19, Hyatt has now been arrested a total of 61 times in Colorado, according to the affidavit. As of Friday, Hyatt remained in the Moffat County Jail.

Hyatt’s attorney, Public Defender Shannel Daniels, requested his bond be lowered from $100,000 to $20,000 during a bond hearing at the Moffat County Combined Courts on Friday.

Fourteenth Judicial Deputy District Attorney Kevin Schield asked the court to keep Hyatt’s bond at $100,000, noting his extensive criminal history and the severity of the charges in the case.

Schield also stated that Hyatt has “continued to deal drugs while on bond” in other cases and emphasized the importance of prioritizing community safety.

Ultimately, Moffat County Judge James Hesson declined to modify the bond, attributing the decision to the high amount of meth found in Hyatt’s residence and because he is a potential danger to society.

Hyatt’s next court date in this case is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.
