Craig man arrested for allegedly taking photos of women in Steamboat Springs restaurant bathroom
A Craig man was arrested by the All Crimes Enforcement Team on Thursday for allegedly taking photos of women in a Steamboat Springs restaurant bathroom, according to a news release.
Dustin Hyatt, 47, is charged with 26 counts of invasion of privacy for sexual gratification and 25 counts of criminal attempt, states the news release from the All Crimes Enforcement Team. All of the charges are misdemeanors.
According to the news release, officers with the All Crimes Enforcement Team — a task force comprised of officers from the Routt and Moffat county sheriff’s offices, the Steamboat, Craig and Hayden police departments, and the 14th Judicial District Attorney’s Office — “uncovered” that Hyatt was in possession of “voyeuristic” photos.
The photos were of various people in a bathroom, all of whom “appear” to be adults and are “largely unidentifiable,” states the news release. After further investigation, the bathroom was identified as the Jimmy John’s bathroom in Steamboat Springs.
According to the arrest affidavit, the photos were obtained by law enforcement after Hyatt was arrested Feb. 20 for allegedly violating a protection order.
At the time of his arrest, Hyatt was “dressed as a woman and wearing a women’s white wig and latex-type fake breasts,” and admitted to being a “long-term” user of methamphetamine, states the affidavit.
Hyatt told officers that he had transported “two or four” ounces of meth to Craig from Grand Junction about six weeks before the arrest, according to the affidavit.
Law enforcement then obtained Hyatt’s phone to investigate drug transactions after he gave permission, according to court documents. While looking through the phone, a law enforcement officer saw “images and/or videos of women in bathroom stalls.” The phone was later returned to Hyatt.
According to the affidavit, Hyatt was previously arrested on May 23, 2023, for placing his cell phone “face-up in a City Market hand basket” and “bumping into females wearing skirts or similar clothing with the basket.”
Hyatt was alleged to have been taking photos and videos of “the buttocks and undergarments” of nine “unsuspecting women,” states the affidavit. He was arrested at the Jimmy John’s in Steamboat Springs.
Hyatt was charged with nine counts of invasion of privacy for sexual gratification, but the charges were dropped, according to the affidavit. Hyatt was later found guilty of a lowered charge of “lewd exposure,” which is a petty offense.
According to criminal history provided by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Hyatt has been arrested in Colorado 59 times by 19 different agencies since 1998.
According to the CBI report, Hyatt has been accused of crimes involving drug possession and distribution, burglary, theft, assault, child abuse, cruelty to animals, trespassing, shoplifting, illegal weapon possession, tampering with evidence, robbery, identity theft, smuggling contraband into prison and other charges.
Since 2018, Hyatt has been arrested 13 times in Routt and Moffat counties by local law enforcement agencies.
According to the affidavit, while interviewing Hyatt about the photos and videos found on his phone, he told law enforcement that he “propped up his cell phone on water supply lines underneath the women’s bathroom sink” in the Jimmy John’s bathroom “in hopes of capturing images of naked women.”
Hyatt stated that he did this “approximately 10 times” in 2024 and used his smart watch to remotely control the recordings on his phone.
According to the affidavit, officers “explained” to Hyatt that “the victims in his voyeuristic photos are somebody’s wife, or girlfriend, or mother … “
In response, the affidavit states that Hyatt told law enforcement, “If somebody did that to my sister or my old lady or whatever … I’d … mop ’em! Mop ’em! And yet, I’m the one that was doing it.”
The affidavit later requests that bond on the warrant be set at $20,000. According to the arrest warrant, District Court Judge Billy-George Hertzke set bond at $1,500 on March 18.
According to documents obtained by the newspaper, Hyatt was arrested by Craig police Sunday — three days after his arrest at the Steamboat Jimmy John’s — for alleged meth possession, violating a protection order and possession of drug paraphernalia.
According to District Attorney Matt Karzen, Hyatt was released from Moffat County Jail on Monday after posting a $10,000 bond.
In response to an email from the Steamboat Pilot & Today inquiring about Hyatt’s extensive criminal record, Karzen stated: “As a general matter, because of the presumption of innocence and requirement of proof beyond a reasonable doubt, the focus in the justice system is not on how many times a person was arrested, but on convictions or dispositions — an arrest is not an adjudication of guilt, as I am sure you know.”
Hyatt’s next court appearance for the voyeurism case is set for 10 a.m. April 8.
