The Steamboat Springs Police Department issued a shelter-in-place order for the area of the 2300 Block of Abbey Court in Steamboat Springs on Tuesday after a male suspect was believed to be barricaded in a home in the area just after 5 p.m.

Law enforcement officers, including a SWAT team, searched and cleared the home just before 7 p.m. The shelter-in-place order was lifted around 7:30 p.m.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the suspect’s whereabouts remained unknown.

The shelter-in-place order came after a “Hispanic male” suspect allegedly “assaulted a former girlfriend” and inflicted “significant injuries,” Steamboat Springs Police Chief Mark Beckett said at the scene of the shelter-in-place.

The assault took place “on the other side of town,” according to Beckett.

First responders from multiple agencies in Routt County gathered in the area of the 2300 block of Abbey Court Tuesday evening in response to a standoff with a suspect Steamboat police said was involved in a domestic dispute.

“We are working on whether or not it is a felony offense at this point,” said Beckett. “There is a second victim of stalking, we believe, that we are still working on interviewing.”

“At a minimum, we have a bunch of misdemeanor assault charges,” he added.

Law enforcement tracked the suspect’s vehicle through traffic cameras throughout Steamboat Springs, leading them to a residence on the 3200 block of Abbey Court.

“We knew pretty soon between when we saw it on the cameras and when our officers got here that he took the (license) plate off, and either went inside and barricaded or fled,” said Beckett.

The suspect did not use a weapon in the assault, Beckett added. As of around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, law enforcement believed the suspect was unarmed.

Beckett also said that the suspect does not have a violent criminal history and is not an immediate threat to the public.
