Andrew ‘Andy’ John Stofan a longtime Steamboat Springs resident and distinguished NASA leader died on October 26 in Fairfax Virginia. At NASA, Stofan directed the Titan-Centaur and Atlas Centaur offices, responsible for the launches of the Pioneer 10 and 11 probes, the Viking Mars missions, and the Voyager probes. At NASA Headquarters Stofan’s positions included overseeing the initial deployment of the International Space Station program. Stofan acted as Director of the Lewis (now Glenn) Research Center in the mid-1980’s. Following his retirement from NASA, Stofan continued to contribute to the aerospace industry at Martin Marietta, Analex Corporation and Lockheed Missiles and Space Company.

A regular visitor to Steamboat from the early 1970’s, Stofan retired to Steamboat Springs, Colorado in 1998. He was a member of Rotary, an Ambassador for Steamboat Resort and served as a Trustee of the Tread of Pioneers Museum. He was also a Trustee of Hiram College, his alma mater.

Stofan is survived by Barbara, his wife of 70 years, his daughters Lynn Kaplan (a Steamboat resident) and Ellen Stofan, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

The family requests donations be sent to Tread of Pioneers Museum in his memory.
