In celebration of National Public Lands Day, the U.S. Forest Service and nonprofit Routt County Riders will host a volunteer trail work day near Rabbit Ears Pass that also represents the first public dig day for the new Mad Rabbit trail system.
The Bruce’s Trail Work Day off U.S. Highway 40 is planned for 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday to begin work on a trail off the existing Bruce’s Nordic Trail.
“This will be the first volunteer opportunity in the long-awaited Mad Rabbit trail system,” according to organizers. “We will begin the green flow trail off of the existing Bruce’s Nordic Trail by digging with hand tools to establish the bench of the new trail.”
Volunteers are asked to sign up in advance online via RouttCountyRiders.org/events to learn the exact details for meeting on Saturday morning. Volunteers should come prepared for outdoor work with sturdy shoes, gloves, hat and water.
Participating volunteers will be treated to snacks and lunch from Yampa Sandwich Co. and après beverages provided by Mountain Tap Brewery.
National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest single-day volunteer event for public lands and also represents a fee-free day at day-use sites on national forests and grasslands, according to a Forest Service media release.
