Hikers found a 51-year-old man from Carencro, Louisiana, later identified as Robert Landry, unresponsive Monday in Rocky Mountain National Park. They found Landry about a mile from the Mount Ida Trailhead on the west side of the park, according to a park news release.

The hikers contacted park rangers using a personal locator beacon and gave Landry CPR until rangers arrived and continued medical care. Landry was later pronounced dead.

In its news release, the park wrote that the incident is under investigation and rangers extracted Landry using a litter, or stretcher, to carry him out to the trailhead. The Grand County Coroner’s Office took the body and announced Thursday that Landry’s death was consistent with an acute coronary event and high altitude pulmonary edema.

The Grand County Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Medical Services, Grand Lake Fire and Classic Air Medical all responded to the incident.

This is the third death in Rocky Mountain National Park in the past month.
