A Steamboat Springs High School graduate and Civil Air Patrol cadet received the prestigious Eaker Award on Tuesday, promoting him to cadet lieutenant colonel.
Andrew Picking, a graduating member of the class of 2025, will be attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and is joining the Air Force ROTC.
The Eaker Award was named in honor of Gen. Ira C. Eaker, one of the forefathers of the independent U.S. Air Force, and it is the second-highest award in the Civil Air Patrol Cadet program.
The Civil Air Patrol, a non-profit organization, helps provide emergency services through aviation and ground patrols, as well as supports youth development and aerospace education.
Receiving the rare award promotes a cadet to the grade of cadet lieutenant colonel, the second highest in the cadet program.
“(The award) shows that I’ve lived up to the expectations, but it allows me to continue my learning and career in Civil Air Patrol,” Picking said in a statement.

Cadets must write an essay and give a speech on one of three provided topics. They must also attend the Civil Air Patrol Leadership Academy.
Picking earned the commander’s commendation award from the Idaho Wing Encampment, attending five week-long military training-style encampments in total. He is currently serving as the cadet commander for the Steamboat Springs Composite Squadron in the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program.
Picking previously attended the National Blue Beret as a part of the National Cadet Special Activities during the AirVenture Airshow, and will be attending again this year as a flight commander.
