Letter to the editor: Turning the page on housing

The recent mutual decision for Jason Peasley to step away as executive director of the Yampa Valley Housing Authority presents an opportunity for our community to turn the page.

It was the right decision for both YVHA and the broader community. YVHA has achieved meaningful successes during Mr. Peasley’s tenure, and our community should acknowledge and thank him for his years of service, and subsequently providing us with the space to heal.

Housing has been one of the most difficult and divisive issues facing Steamboat in recent years. While opinions have differed sharply about the path forward, there is one point nearly everyone agrees on: our valley still needs more attainable housing for the people who live and work here. Leadership transitions can create space for healing and rebuilding trust.

This moment gives YVHA, local leaders, and the community a chance to refocus on solutions that bring people together rather than divide them.

It also allows an opportunity to reset the conversation around Brown Ranch and invite new ideas and perspectives forward. Many residents are ready for a more measured approach—targeted, financially responsible projects that support the “missing middle”: Teachers, first responders, nurses, small business employees, and young families who keep our community strong.

We need a strong Housing Authority and this transition provides the ability to restore confidence in YVHA and move forward together.
