Hayden police arrested a man over the weekend for allegedly distributing and possessing fentanyl, according to the affidavit for arrest.

Lyle Chase, 33, was arrested around 8:20 p.m. Saturday and was booked on charges including unlawful distribution of fentanyl, unlawful possession of fentanyl, possession of a weapon by a previous offender and possession of a controlled substance; along with unlawfully carrying a concealed weapon, driving under the influence and speeding.

A Hayden police officer driving behind a vehicle with Wyoming plates on East Jefferson Avenue Saturday night noticed the vehicle in front of him was allegedly driving about 10 mph over the speed limit, according to the affidavit.

The officer then turned on his emergency lights to stop the vehicle. A Routt County Sheriff’s deputy was also behind the Hayden police officer at the time of the incident and “stopped to back (the Hayden officer) up,” states the affidavit.

After identifying the driver as Chase, the sheriff’s deputy deployed K-9 Winston on the vehicle and “got a positive indication,” according to the affidavit.

After asking if he had any weapons, Chase told police that he had a knife and pointed to his waistband, states the affidavit.

Police took the alleged knife out of Chase’s waistband, finding that it had a 12-14 inch blade and sheath, according to the document.

The affidavit further states that Chase told police “he may have some personal use narcotics in his pocket.”

In his pocket, law enforcement allegedly found two marijuana containers. One container contained marijuana, and the other allegedly contained “less than a gram of what (Chase) claimed was methamphetamine,” continues the affidavit.

While law enforcement officers searched Chase’s vehicle, Chase stated that “all the drugs that was going to be found was for personal use,” the document says.

Chase continued to reiterate that “all the blue pills and fentanyl was for personal use,” and told police that there were drugs in his backpack in the vehicle, states the affidavit. He then added that the way the drugs were packaged “would look like he was distributing it.”

In the backpack, the sheriff’s deputy found 25 blue counterfeit fentanyl pills, 16 sealed plastic bags “containing less than one-half gram of powdered fentanyl,” two metal narcotic pipes, one metal “drug-scraping” spoon, “several dozen” empty plastic bags and two pieces of “cut tin foil with burnt drug residue,” the affidavit says.

“(Chase) did explain he had meth, blue fentanyl pills and powdered fentanyl,” continues the document. Chase allegedly “stated he just hoped it was not a felony amount.”

A sergeant with the Colorado State Patrol then arrived at the scene and told the two law enforcement officers that there were “indications that (Chase) may be under the influence of narcotics,” according to the affidavit.

The affidavit adds that Chase had a warrant out for his arrest in Adams County for unlawful possession of a controlled substance, and he was previously convicted of a felony in Wyoming.

According to the Routt County Combined Courts clerk’s office, Chase posted a $500 bond and was released from the Routt County Jail on Monday.

Chase’s next court appearance is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday.
