Two Yampa Valley churches are participating this fall as Operation Christmas Child collection sites for the nonprofit international relief organization Samaritan’s Purse, which sends shoeboxes of small gifts to children in need across the world from Ukraine to Uruguay.

According to the Samaritan’s Purse website, Steamboat Christian Center at 821 Dougherty Road is participating again this year with collection times starting at 4 p.m. Nov. 17 and ending at 10 a.m. Nov. 24. For questions, email Hadley@SteamboatChristian.com.

In Moffat County, Craig Christian Church at 960 W. Victory Way is collecting boxes starting Nov. 17 and ending at 11 a.m. Nov. 24. For questions, email Office@CraigChurch.org.

Operation Christmas Child began in 1993 with a request to fill shoeboxes with gifts for children in war-torn Bosnia. The current national collection includes 4,500 drop-off locations across the U.S. and in 10 other countries. Then the filled shoeboxes are distributed in more than 100 nations and isolated areas.

The boxes are packed with appropriate items for boys and girls in the age categories of 2-4, 5-9 and 10-14. Boxes can include such items as school and personal care supplies, crafts, small toys and personal notes from the gifting family.
