Case against Steamboat local accused of possessing child porn continued to next month
The case against a Steamboat local accused of possessing 14 videos and photos depicting child sexual abuse was continued to mid-September during a Wednesday court hearing at the Routt County Combined Courts.
Michael Lake, 20, of Steamboat Springs, was arrested July 31 and charged with 15 counts of sexual exploitation of a child as Class 4 and Class 5 felonies.
On July 17, police found 14 videos and photos of children, “approximately 4 years in age to preteen-aged children performing sexual acts and engaging in sexual intercourse with adult males,” on Lake’s cell phone, according to the arrest affidavit.
As of July 31, Steamboat police still had “several other electronics to download and review,” according to the document. Police believe more child sexual abuse material may be found during the investigation.
Routt County Judge Erin Wilson set Lake’s bond at $3,000 cash-only and issued a protection order on July 31, preventing Lake from having contact with anyone under 18. Lake bonded out of the Routt County Jail the following day.
According to the Routt County Combined Courts clerk’s office, Lake’s attorney, Sean Brown, requested a continuance. Lake’s next court date is scheduled for 10 a.m. Sept. 17.
Editor’s note: Every person accused of a crime is presumed to be innocent unless and until their guilt is established beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
