Colorado Parks and Wildlife hunting and fishing licenses now are on sale at retail outlets, Parks and Wildlife offices and online, according to a news release.

Anglers must have a new license by April 1. Lion hunters also must buy a new license by April 1 that will be valid through March 31, 2014, according to the release.

A resident annual fishing license is $26 for adults 16 and older and $1 for seniors 64 and older. Youths 15 and younger are not required to purchase an annual license but must purchase a $5 second-rod stamp if they plan to fish with a second line.

Adults and seniors who purchase a license also must buy a $10 Colorado Habitat Stamp, the proceeds of which are used to preserve and protect wildlife habitat throughout the state.

The purchase price of any hunting or fishing license also includes a search and rescue fee.

City of Steamboat Springs asks residents to replace meters

The city of Steamboat Springs is asking residents who have not had their water meters replaced to schedule an appointment by calling 970-367-6600 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Water service will be disrupted for about 20 minutes during the upgrade.

Contest held for 1st crane sighting of the season

The Colorado Crane Conservation Coalition is sponsoring a contest for the first crane sighting of the season. The cranes winter in New Mexico and Arizona before heading back to the Yampa Valley during the first half of March, according to a news release.

To participate in the contest, document any sightings of cranes in the Yampa Valley and send the photo with date, time and location of sighting to coloradocranes@gmail.com or Colorado Crane Conservation Coalition, 40625 Routt County Road 69A, Hayden, CO 81639.

At the end of March, the winner’s name and photo will be posted at http://www.coloradocranes.org.

To celebrate its first year in business, Oak Creek’s Circle R, 202 Sharp St., is hosting a beer dinner Saturday. The five-course dinner is $45 and pairs with beers from Crazy Mountain Brewery. Saturday’s Penguin Plunge benefits cancer services

Penguin Plunge participants are just a day away from taking a dip in freezing-cold water to raise money for cancer services at Yampa Valley Medical Center. The annual fundraiser is at noon Saturday at Catamount Ranch & Club.

Participants are asked to commit to raising at least $125 before jumping into a freezing pool followed by a quick soak in the hot tub. Some even go back for another plunge, and those who enter as a “chicken” do not need to get wet at all.

This year’s Plunge marks the end of a three-year plan to raise money for cancer services. The event raised nearly $90,000 in 2011 and $70,000 in 2012.

Mother Daughter Day is April 6 at the Grand

The annual Mother Daughter Day is from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. April 6 in the Burgess Creek Ballroom at The Steamboat Grand. New Frontiers for Women and Girls hosts the free event for fifth-grade girls and their mothers or female friends to strengthen their relationships before transitioning to middle school. Breakfast will be served. Topics that will be covered include: self-esteem and changing bodies, peer pressure, parenting and healthy bodies and lifestyles.

As part of the peer pressure presentation, a panel of middle school students will answer anonymous questions from attending girls about what to expect. During the parenting discussion, a panel of local women will answer questions from attending mothers about what to expect as their daughters head to middle school and beyond. And the healthy bodies and lifestyles portion of the program will teach participants about nutrition, stretching and yoga.
