Following cooler temperatures and days of rain, the city of Steamboat Springs reopened the Yampa River Friday for all recreational uses except for angling.

“Our flows and temperature criteria are no longer at our city closure thresholds. The city will also start releasing an additional 5cfs from Stagecoach (on Friday),” Open Space and Trails Supervisor Jenny Carey said in an email.

Carey noted that a voluntary angling closure issued by Colorado Parks and Wildlife remains in place.

Private tubing, swimming and other river recreation is now permitted. Commercial tubing operators in the city will also be permitted to operate but may do so on a case-by-case basis due to inclement weather.

The city closed the river to commercial use for the second time this summer on Aug. 14 and asked the public to voluntarily avoid all recreational activities on the water. The decision was triggered after water flows dipped below 85 cubic feet per second, the minimum threshold established to protect the river’s health and aquatic life, over two consecutive days.

Carey said city staff began removing closure notices on Friday morning and would continue monitoring river flows and temperatures.
