For the first time this season, and the second time in his career, Steamboat Springs’ Cody Winters reached a World Cup podium in parallel slalom.
At Bad Gastein, Austria, Winters finished third, behind Alexander Krashniak of Bulgaria and Maurizio Bormolini of Italy.
In the tournament-style knockout competition, seeding was determined through qualification runs, where Winters placed 11th.
He faced Alexander Payer of Austria in the opening round — who did not finish — then bested Dario Caviezel of Switzerland by 0.23 second, securing at least a fourth-place finish.
In the semifinal against Bormolini, the Italian racer edged Winters by 0.76 second. He then faced first-seeded Stefan Baumeister of Germany in the small final and secured his spot on the podium when Baumeister did not finish.
His last run was arguably his best, showcasing the straight-line approach that has been a hallmark of his career.
Upon crossing the finish line, Winters pumped his fists with joy and let out an adrenaline-filled shout.
A year ago, Winters stood in the same position when he secured the first podium of his career, finishing third at Bad Gastein. One month later, he finished third in snowboard cross at Cortina d’Ampezzo.
Winters could not be reached for comment.
Four more World Cup events remain in Alpine snowboarding ahead of the Olympics next month. The lineup includes snowboard cross at Dongbeiya, China Jan. 16-18; parallel giant slalom at Bansko, Bulgaria Jan. 17-18; parallel giant slalom at Simonhöhe, Austria Jan. 23-24; and parallel giant slalom at Rogla, Slovenia Jan. 31.
