Sunny skies this week ahead of snow predicted for Steamboat Springs

Steamboat Springs saw blue skies and temperatures slowly climbing toward 32 degrees on Sunday, a pattern expected to continue through much of the workweek, according to Mike Weissbluth, a local meteorologist who posts twice-weekly forecasts to SnowAlarm.com.

Tuesday and Wednesday will see some cloud cover in the area, according to Weissbluth. Thursday is likely to be cloudy yet still mild, setting the stage for a powerful winter storm on Friday, he added.

Weissbluth said a significant winter storm is also developing over the Gulf of Alaska and is expected to reach the West Coast by Wednesday. Moisture from the storm will lead to a cloudy but warm Thursday, followed by potential significant snowfall later in the day Thursday or on Friday. This will be accompanied by much colder temperatures, he said, more than 10 degrees below average.

Weather models suggest this colder and wetter pattern will continue through the weekend and into next week, said Weissbluth — leading up to the vernal equinox at 3:01 a.m. March 20.
