Students were evacuated from the Sleeping Giant school in Steamboat Springs Tuesday morning due to an odor investigation and the discovery of smoke inside the building.
Normal operations will resume at 11:40 a.m., according to a statement from the Steamboat Springs School District Director of Communications, Laura Milius.
“An HVAC issue caused the odor and smoke inside Sleeping Giant School,” said an 11:12 a.m. statement from the school district. “The fire department has inspected the building and confirmed it is safe to reenter.”
First responders were called to the school over a report of odors in the building on Tuesday morning just before 10 a.m.
Students were evacuated from the school and, after a brief investigation, it was determined the odor and smoke were the result of a burned HVAC unit, according to personnel on the scene.
“All students and staff are safe and accounted for. Students have been evacuated to the field while personnel determine the source of the odor,” a statement from the school district read.
“At this time, you do not need to come pick up your child. No one is inside the building, so please do not call the school office or come to the school,” it added. “The safety and security of your child is our top priority. We will provide an update as soon as more information becomes available.”
