Steamboat’s first comprehensive Historic Preservation Plan available for public review

The city of Steamboat Springs is inviting public feedback on its first comprehensive Historic Preservation Plan and updated design guidelines, now available for review online, according to a statement released Monday.

Following more than two years of work and nearly a year of public engagement, the plan outlines goals and strategies for strengthening historic preservation across the community.

Rather than focusing solely on maintaining old structures, the proposed plan positions preservation as a tool for addressing citywide priorities such as housing, sustainability, recreation and community character.

The Historic Preservation Plan will guide policy updates within the city’s broader Community Canvas and formalize preservation priorities already reflected in city and county planning documents.

Residents can review the draft plan and updated design guidelines on the city’s website and share input through Sunday, Oct. 12. Feedback will be presented during the Historic Preservation Commission meeting on Oct. 13 and City Council’s discussion Oct. 21.

“Historic preservation touches everyone in different and meaningful ways,” said Historic Preservation Planner Caitlin Berube-Smith in the statement. “Whether you’re a longtime local or new to the Yampa Valley, your voice is critical in shaping the future of preservation in our community.”

The planning effort has been supported in part by grants from the State Historical Fund and the Certified Local Government program.
