Steamboat Springs to see rain, snow later this week after record warmth

Steamboat Springs wrapped up the weekend under mostly sunny skies and spring-like warmth, with Sunday temperatures reaching 60 degrees downtown and 40 degrees atop the mountain, according to local meteorologist Mike Weissbluth’s twice-weekly forecast.

Monday delivered another unseasonably warm day while Tuesday should see a cooler shift, wrote Weissbluth, with 60-degree temperatures forecast— still approximately 10 degrees above the seasonal average — and scattered showers possible.

By Wednesday, rain is likely at lower elevations with snow developing above 8,500 feet, he wrote. Steamboat Ski Resort could pick up several inches of new snow through Wednesday night.

With a stronger cold front expected to move in late Thursday, temperatures are expected to retreat to below average for Friday and Saturday, according to Weissbluth.

Friday morning is likely to see snow in town with heavier snowfall up top, he added, bringing much-needed moisture to Steamboat Springs, which is currently in Stage 2 drought conditions.

From Tuesday night through Thursday morning, “the first storm of the week will be warm with a lot of moisture,” wrote Joel Gratz, founding meteorologist at OpenSnow.com. “The rain/snow line will be somewhere between the base and mid-mountain, and the upper mountain will be all snow. Total snowfall should be 4-8 inches,” Gratz wrote.

A second storm later in the week, from Thursday night through Saturday morning, is expected to “be colder, with a decent chance for 4-8 inches of fluffier powder,” Gratz wrote, adding that the forecasted amounts could change as the week progresses.
