Steamboat Springs sees slight overall increase in August sales tax collections
Year-to-date revenues up a little, but below 'budgeted expectations'

The city’s final August 2025 sales, use, accommodation and short-term rental tax report shows a 1% increase in collections compared to August 2024, with a difference of $31,631, according to a news release.
Year-to-date sales tax collections through August came in 2.68%, or $768,599, higher than the same period last year.
Notable decreases in collections include a 9.26% decrease in sporting goods, an 11.01% decrease in marijuana and a 4.17% decrease in construction.
The decreases were offset by a 4% retail increase, a 3.15% increase in restaurants and a 3.98% increase in grocery stores.
Accommodations tax collections are dedicated to maintenance of improvements and amenities that enhance the community identity, environmental sustainability and economic health of Steamboat Springs. August 2025 collections were 0.29% higher than August 2024.
“Year-to-date tax collections through August are 1.17% higher than this same period last year — however, the city is still falling short of the 2025 budgeted expectations,” states the release.
Short-term rental tax collections are dedicated for use to increase the stock of affordable and attainable housing by providing incentives and contributions to facilitate development of affordable and attainable housing. August 2025 STR collections were 1.68% higher than August 2024, with an $11,214 increase.
Building Use Tax is used to fund capital projects for the city. August 2025 collections were down 65.15% compared to August last year, with a total $672,271 decrease. Year-to-date collections through August 2025 were down $3,084,866 or 47.34% from the same period last year.
