The Steamboat Springs School District will conduct a comprehensive active shooter training exercise in partnership with local law enforcement and first responders from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday, according to a school district news release.

On Tuesday morning, an active shooter response simulation will take place at Steamboat Springs High School, followed by a reunification drill at Yampa Valley High School in the afternoon.

“This type of coordinated training allows us to strengthen our preparedness and ensure a seamless partnership with local emergency responders,” said Celine Wicks, superintendent of the Steamboat Springs School District, in a statement. “It’s about being ready as a community for any scenario.”

Community members can expect to see an increased presence of law enforcement and first responders in the area, as well as role players acting as injured individuals. Sirens and loud noises should also be expected.

The simulation is a training exercise only, and no action is needed. Community members are urged to spread the word about the exercise to prevent unnecessary alarm.
