Steamboat Springs behind budget in September tax collections
The city’s preliminary September sales, use, accommodation and short-term rental tax report shows a 0.77% increase, totaling $24,792, compared to the same month last year, according to a news release from the city.
Year-to-date collections also increased by 2.57% compared to the same period last year. The city budgeted a 3% increase in sales tax for 2025, with actual collections trailing behind budget, states the release.
Notable changes include a 13.63% increase in miscellaneous retail, a 13.86% decrease in construction and a 10.12% decrease in marijuana in September 2025, compared to September 2024.
Accommodations tax collections are dedicated to maintenance of improvements and amenities that enhance the community identity, environmental sustainability and economic health of Steamboat Springs. September collections decreased by 2.03% compared to the same time last year, with year-to-date collections increasing by 0.97%.
Short-term rental tax collections are dedicated for use to increase the stock of affordable and attainable housing by providing incentives and contributions to facilitate development of affordable and attainable housing. September collections were 1.16% lower compared to last year, with a difference of $7,664.
Building Use Tax is used to fund capital projects for the city. Net September collections increased by 103.85% this year compared to last year, with a total of $368,033. However, year-to-date collections are “significantly lower” than last year, decreasing by 39.54%.
