The Steamboat Springs School District RE-2 has announced plans to destroy special education records for students who graduated, withdrew or exited special education services on or before June 4, 2020, according to a statement released Tuesday.

The records are scheduled for destruction on Aug. 1, in compliance with federal regulations under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

The records set for destruction include individualized education programs, evaluation reports and test protocols, reviews of existing data summaries, and all other personally identifiable information within special education files.

The district will keep basic archival information, such as student names, grades, attendance records, classes attended, grade levels completed and years enrolled.

Parents or eligible students (those 18 or older, unless under legal guardianship) may request copies of these records before they are destroyed. Identification is required to obtain files, and proof of guardianship must be provided if applicable.

To request records or for more information, contact Kristi Bertron, exceptional student data manager, at kbertron@ssk12.org. The deadline to request records is Aug. 1.
