Steamboat police make multiple arrests after Dream Island gunshot reports

Steamboat Springs police made multiple arrests at the Dream Island mobile home park over the weekend after responding to reports of gunshots in the area.

Officers were called to the mobile home park shortly after midnight Saturday in response to a report that someone fired “several rounds of a firearm,” according to a city news release.

Responding officers then recovered “multiple handgun casings” and used surveillance footage to determine that “a man appeared to have fired the rounds into the air and not at a specific target,” the news release said.

According to the news release, officers were able to determine which residence the suspect entered after firing the rounds and proceeded to surround the home.

At around 6:30 a.m. Saturday, the Routt County Combined Emergency Response team entered the residence with a search warrant and placed two men into custody, according to the news release.

Neither of the individuals were found to be the person who allegedly fired the gun, but one of the men, Jose Lara Figueroa, 25, was arrested for drug-related offenses including: unlawful possession of a controlled substance; unlawful use of a controlled substance; tampering with physical evidence; and unlawful distribution, manufacturing, dispensing or sale of a controlled substance.

On Sunday morning, the county’s emergency response team executed a second search warrant on another Dream Island unit and arrested a man who is alleged to have fired the gun the day prior.

Darwin J. Mejia Cruz, 27, was arrested and faces charges for reckless endangerment and prohibited use of a weapon, according to police.

Steamboat police are asking individuals who may have witnessed the incident to contact Detective Tabith Alt at 970-879-4344.
