The Steamboat Springs High School Mountain Bike Team capped its regular season with a decisive performance in Nathrop, winning the Chalk Creek Stampede and clinching the overall Yampa Region title in Division 1 of the Colorado High School Cycling League, according to a statement released Monday.
The 6.7-mile course at the base of Mount Princeton challenged riders with rocky singletrack and steep climbs, but Steamboat’s consistency carried the day. The team tallied 7,547 points — just ahead of Boulder’s 7,505 — for the regional championship.
Whitney Warnke placed second in varsity girls, while Quinn Dressen won the JV boys race and topped the region’s JV standings.
Other top finishers included Allie Reznicek (fifth, varsity girls), Jackson Rosencrantz and Lucia Magnotta (both second in JV divisions) and Sydney Soard (third, JV girls). Soard and Odin Gruben also ended the season as points leaders in their classes, with Gruben winning the sophomore boys’ race.
Reznicek received the league’s Slingshot Award for her improvement throughout the season, and the team as a whole earned the rodeo-themed Team Spirit Award for enthusiasm and creativity.
“Every rider contributed to this championship. From varsity to freshman, they showed heart, skill and teamwork,” said Head Coach Paul Majors in the statement. “Winning both the race and the region title is a reflection of how hard they’ve worked all season.”
With the regional title secured, Steamboat riders now turn their focus to the Colorado High School Cycling League State Championships, set for Oct. 18–19 at the Colorado Mountain College Spring Valley campus in Glenwood Springs.
