The city of Steamboat Springs announced Monday that planned irrigation work has started at Ski Town Park.
The park will remain closed through the year as crews replace the existing watering system — which the city says is outdated and failing — with a new “smart system” that includes soil moisture sensors, automatic watering adjustments and other water saving technology.
The park has been the home of the annual Cowpie Classic rugby tournament for 49 years, but the tournament will continue in July after City Council members approved an ordinance allowing the competition to be held at Emerald Park.
A city ordinance passed in 1996 restricts Emerald Park uses to organized youth activities only, along with informal adult pick-up games and general passive recreation, but council’s decision provides a one-time waiver to allow the Cowpie Classic to take place there.
The rugby tournament kicks off July 6.
