Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp. has appointed longtime local resident Gavin Malia as its new vice president of engineering, maintenance and facilities, effective July 30, according to a statement released Wednesday.

Malia brings more than 20 years of experience in engineering leadership and facility management to his new role. Most recently, he served as vice president of real estate for Resort Ventures West, where he began in 2007, working his way up the ladder from development construction coordinator to project manager and development manager before assuming the VP role in 2017.

“Malia brings a unique combination of community foundational knowledge and understanding of how the resort operates and where we can grow into the future,” said Dave Hunter, president and COO of Ski Corp., in the statement. “He is the ideal addition to round out our leadership team.”

In his new position, Malia will supervise the resort’s engineering operations, maintenance programs, and facility oversight to ensure safe, efficient operations across all lodges, equipment, infrastructure and construction projects.

Beyond Resort Ventures West, Malia has served as managing partner for Steamboat Building Company and as a partner/broker associate with Ascent Real Estate for about a decade. He also worked for five years as a GIS coordinator for the city.

Malia has been deeply involved in community service, serving as board president for both the Mount Werner Water & Sanitation District and the Wildhorse Meadows Master Owner’s Association. He has also chaired committees for the Urban Renewal Authority Advisory Committee, the Accommodations Tax Committee and the City of Steamboat Springs Green Team.

Malia holds a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies from the University of Colorado and a master’s in business administration from Colorado State University.

“When I saw this job become available, I just knew this was my next step,” said Malia in the statement. “The link between what I’ve been doing in this community and other Colorado resort towns for the past 20 years and the opportunity to move my home resort forward is incredibly exciting.”
