Letter to the Editor: Brown Ranch impact

A vital part of Community Character is ensuring people from all economic backgrounds—teachers, healthcare workers, first responders, retail and service staff—can afford to live here. When we came in 1966, a starting teacher earned $5,000 but could buy a home for $15,000.
Today, that salary is $55,500, but homes are often priced in multi-millions. The cost of living has far outpaced wages.
In 1999, the Brown Ranch property was already designated for future growth. The Housing Authority, created 25 years ago to provide attainable housing, has proven its ability to do so — though the need far exceeds the supply.
While I’m not personally affected by the housing shortage, I care deeply about its impact on Community Character. Most future Brown Ranch residents likely live outside city limits and can’t vote in city elections. That makes it our responsibility — those of us who do live here — to protect the character of our community.
City Council elections happen every two years. I urge eligible voters to pay close attention to candidates’ positions—not just on Brown Ranch, but on all issues—and to vote. Valid concerns have been raised and are being addressed, but the need remains urgent.
I urge strong consideration for those individuals who would stop “kicking the can down the road” and act now to maintain what Community Character we still have. We must ensure people can live where they work. Let’s stay mindful of how housing affects the Community Character of this place we all call home.
