Larry the Camel has been a beloved fixture in the Grand and Routt county communities for years. He lived at Troublesome Horse Rescue and Rehabilitation. This center for rescued horses, donkeys, mules and other ranch animals is located on Chipeta Ranch outside of Kremmling.

Tragically, Larry passed away on July 4. He was struck by lightning and killed instantly, according to Troublesome. He leaves behind Camille the camel, his friend with whom he shared a pasture and corral, his owner Bethany Aurin, and the many people whom he touched throughout his years in the area.

Larry often visited members of the community to brighten their day as a goodwill ambassador for Troublesome Horse Rescue, Chipeta Ranch, and for camel and animal awareness in general. He was once featured on the television show Dr. Jeff: Rocky Mountain Vet. You can watch the episode here.

The popular camel was a frequent fixture in downtown Steamboat Springs at the Fourth of July parade, and many other public community events throughout northwest Colorado.

“Larry was our ambassador not only for our ranch, but also for the Aurin family,” said Tracy DelliQuadri, a board member at the rescue center. “He greeted everyone who arrived at the ranch. His absence will be felt greatly. We will miss him forever. He was loved by everyone at Troublesome Horse Rescue.”

Middle Park Health’s Cliffview Assisted Living Center in Kremmling was one of his favorite places to visit enjoying treats and pets from the center’s elderly residents. Larry paid a visit to Cliffview in early July before his death.

“Our beloved friend, Larry the Camel brought joys, laughter, kindness and kisses to Cliffview this past week, and in years past,” Middle Park Health wrote on Facebook. “Cliffview has lost a very dear friend and our hearts are broken. We send love and our deepest condolences to Bethany and the Troublesome Horse Rescue family.”
