1 a.m. Aug. 8 – U.S. Highway 40 north of Kremmling has reopened to traffic. The section between milepost 157 and 184 had been closed since around 6 p.m. on August 7 due to a fatal two-car collision.

8:24 p.m. – On August 7, at approximately 5:40 p.m., the Colorado State Patrol responded to U.S. Highway 40 near milepost 173 for a two-vehicle, head-on crash. The crash involved a black Subaru Crosstrek that crossed the center line and collided head-on with a silver Kia sedan, according to a statement by the State Patrol.

The driver of the Kia was pronounced deceased on the scene, with two children being flown by helicopter to a local hospital for treatment of injuries. The driver, a 55-year old female, of the Subaru Crosstrek was also flown to an area hospital for medical treatment, wrote the State Patrol.

The Colorado State Patrol is lead investigating agency for this crash. Highway 40 is currently closed west of Kremmling in both directions for the crash investigation. Alternative routes are advised. Please visit COTrip.org for updates on road closures and alternate routes.

7:15 p.m. – A two-vehicle, head-on collision on U.S. Highway 40 west of Kremmling resulted in one fatality and other major injuries to the involved parties, according to trooper Hunter Matthews of the Colorado State Patrol. The crash occurred at 5:40 p.m.

There is no estimated time for opening the highway as authorities are still landing helicopters in the vicinity. Helicopters were initially planned to fly to Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora and St. Anthony Hospital in the greater Denver area, according to discussion on the Grand County public safety scanner channel.

6:30 p.m. – As of 6:05 p.m., U.S. Highway 40 is closed in both directions west of Kremmling for a serious accident. The roadway between Colorado 14 (22 miles east of Steamboat Springs) and Spruce Street in Kremmling is now closed. The closures are affecting milepoints 157 to 184. Expect delays.
