Local Girl Scouts will participate in a workshop designed to teach the importance of democracy and an appreciation for the nation’s style of government at 9 a.m. Saturday at Sleeping Giant School.

The “Foundations of Democracy: Exploring Civics and Government” workshop will provide an opportunity to see how the next generation of leaders is learning about civic engagement.

Routt County Commissioner Angelica Salinas will participate in the event as a special guest speaker.

The workshop will help launch the new Foundations of Democracy patch program for girls in kindergarten through eighth grade.

“We’re empowering the next generation of leaders and future government officials at Girl Scouts,” said Breann Grell, director of corporate programs at Girl Scouts of Colorado, in a statement. “This event is a great way for girls to get a head start on their civic education and be inspired by local leaders like County Commissioner Salinas.”
