Following fires, CPW reopens Oak Ridge and Piceance State Wildlife areas with restrictions
Following containment of the Lee and Elk fires, Colorado Parks and Wildlife has reopened the Oak Ridge and Piceance State Wildlife areas starting Monday with some restrictions, according to a statement released on Friday.
At the Oak Ridge State Wildlife Area, public access and campgrounds are open except for the Sleepy Cat entrance and campground, which remain closed. The Lake Avery Reservoir also remains closed due to ongoing dam maintenance and construction since 2024.
The North Ridge Unit of the Piceance State Wildlife Area is open west of Rio Blanco County Road 127, while areas east of the road stay closed. The Little Hills Unit remains closed due to surrounding public land closures by the Bureau of Land Management.
Heavy rains over the fire areas have raised flash flood risks. Hunters are advised to monitor weather stations, avoid flooded roads and seek higher ground if flooding occurs.
Public safety closures remain in place in many national forests and public lands affected by fires. CPW urges hunters to respect closures meant to protect both the public and firefighting crews, even if gates appear open.
For alternative access options, hunters can check the Colorado Hunting Atlas at tinyurl.com/4kxvard2 or contact their local CPW office.
For additional information on closures, contact your local BLM or National Forest district office.
