Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue responded to reports of flames in the area of Storm Mountain Ranch just after midnight Saturday and found the home at 33575 Rushing Water Lane fully engulfed in flames.
There were no injuries associated with the fire, and the house was unoccupied.
According to the fire department, firefighters were dispatched to mile marker 138 on U.S. Highway 40 for a report of “large flames in the area of Storm Mountain Ranch,” and a second caller reported a house on fire near Storm Canyon Trail and Water Song Lane.
The call was then upgraded to a full structure fire, and Steamboat Fire Rescue responded with two engines, a tender, an ambulance and other assets, while a mutual aid water tender from Oak Creek Fire also responded to the call.
Upon arrival, Steamboat Fire Rescue Lt. Dave Hesselton reported “a very large home” fully engulfed in flames at 33575 Rushing Water Lane with large portions of the second floor and roof collapsing.
According to the fire department, a defensive strategy was put in place to ensure the home’s propane tanks and surrounding pine trees did not catch fire. Hoses were also deployed from the first arriving engine to keep the blaze contained to the home.
Smoke is expected to continue to be visible in the area for some time because of the rural nature of the site and limitation on water due to lack of pressurized hydrants.
The cause of the fire is unknown. The investigation is being handled by the Routt County Sheriff’s Office and Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue Fire Marshall Office.
During the initial five minutes, two off-duty personnel responding from home were diverted to a medical call out of Casey’s Pond.
Officials at Steamboat Fire Rescue expressed their gratitude for help from other agencies, including Routt County Communications, the Routt County Sheriff’s Office and Oak Creek Fire.
Storm Mountain Ranch is a neighborhood of luxury homes in Steamboat Springs. According to the Routt County Assessor’s Office, the home was built in 2001 and remodeled in 2022. The home was sold for $7.55 million in 2006, and Larry Stark is listed as the owner.
