Dog lovers Shanee and David Pettengill are nearly set to open the doors of Splash Hounds — The Happy Dog Wash, a new Steamboat Springs business that will cater to the town’s furry friends.
“I wanted an elevated experience, something that was really clean, really safe and convenient,” Shanee Pettengill said of the new dog wash which features four tubs and two drying stations.
Located at 625 S. Lincoln Avenue in unit 205, right next door to Freshies on Emerald Park Lane, the owners said the business will host a soft opening June 20 for friends and family followed by an official opening June 24 and a grand opening celebration June 28.
Shanee and David are joined in the family-run business by their children Emma and Ethan, and business partner, Steve Birch. The renovated space features large windows, a line of four washing tubs and two drying stations which are surrounded by glass walls to let light into the space and offer reactive animals a place to feel safe.
“We wanted to do multiple bays, so that’s what these big baths are all about. We wanted to accommodate mountain dogs as well as small dogs because we’re Dog Town USA,” Shanee Pettengill said. “Not everybody’s got a big German shepherd or a Great Dane, so we’ve got inserts that go into the tubs that allow flexibility whether they have a small dog, or a big dog.”
Customers can choose from several wash options Splash Hounds including a one-time wash ($25 per wash) where the customer can come in during regular business hours to use the tub and drying station, and the drop & wash ($50 per wash) where owners can schedule appointment with a staff member who will wash and dry their dog.
There is also an unlimited membership ($49 per month) which gives dog owners access to the washing and drying facility 24-hours a day, seven days a week.
“We don’t allow customers to groom their dogs in here,” David Pettengill said. “The dogs need to be lice free, and flea free. Dogs also need to be on a leash from the moment they come. We want to make sure that it’s a safe environment for the dogs as well as, for the pet parents.”
Splash Hounds provides towels the premium shampoo, conditioners crafted from a unique blend of essential oils and sustainable ingredients that offer cleansing, nourishing and beautifying benefits.
“We have specific shampoos for specific coats created by a woman-owned business out of New York called Pride & Groom,” David Pettengill said. “They are all natural, no sulfates, no soaps, no dyes and no paraffins. It’s good for the environment, and it’s good for the dog.”
Splash Hounds will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and from noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. The main office can be reached at (970) 792-2025.
The dog wash will also offer a three-wash introductory offer ($39) where dog owners can drop in and see what Splash Hounds is all about.
“Part of what we are about is educating dog owners,” David Pettengill said. “We can offer advice, the right shampoos, the right temperature and the right pressures — all of those things.”
Splash Hounds is also working with other local dog care providers and organizations including Outdoor K9, Powder Paws, Paws & Claws, Mountain Peaks Veterinary Clinic, Routt County Humane Society and Steamboat Digs Dogs, a group which promotes friendly lifestyle opportunities to Steamboat Springs.
“We have coordinated kind of this dog-centric community of services and retailers. We’ve partnered with Outdoor K9, we’ve partnered with Powder Paws the dog walking company and a couple of others,” David Pettengill said. “Probably next summer we will all coordinate a booth at the farmers market so that we’re consistently putting out good educational information.”
