Dementia care partner monthly support groups available in Craig, Steamboat

A new monthly Care Partner Support Group for people caring for individuals with dementia, memory loss and Alzheimer’s disease is now available in Craig, presented by the Colorado Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association and the Senior Social Center.

The support group meets 11 a.m.-noon the third Thursday of each month at the Senior Social Center, 775 Yampa Ave. in Craig. The goal of the group is to build a support system with people who understand.

The group is conducted by a trained facilitator and provides a safe place for care partners to develop a support system, exchange practical information on challenges and possible solutions, talk through issues and ways of coping, share needs and concerns, and learn about community resources. For questions, contact Kristin Skowronski at 970-326-3188 or resources@seniorsocialcenter.org.

The ongoing, free Dementia Caregiver Support Group in Steamboat Springs meets 10:30-11:30 a.m. the second Tuesday of the month at the Steamboat Springs Community Center, 1605 Lincoln Ave. The group addresses the common emotions that caregivers experience and builds resilience through mutual support.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, research shows that the most resilient caregivers seek and accept support. The benefits associated with caregiver support groups include improved coping skills, enhanced sense of empowerment and control, reduced stress and rates of clinical depression, more realistic expectations, access to practical advice and resources, and the creation of new relationships with people on a similar journey.
