An attack on a woman Monday evening in Craig has resulted in the arrest of a man who is now facing multiple felony charges including attempted first-degree murder.

Craig Police were dispatched to the 500 block of Yampa Ave. at 7:19 p.m. in the city after receiving a report of a disturbance. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered a female victim who had suffered multiple stab wounds, according to Craig Police Chief Mike Cochran.

Jack Thomas Trapp, 27, of Craig was arrested and charged with menacing and first-degree assault along with the attempted first-degree murder charge, according to a news release from the Craig Police Department.

Cochran said a witness to the stabbing pursued the alleged perpetrator and held him at gunpoint at the intersection of Breeze and 6th streets until law enforcement officials arrived. The suspect was taken into custody without further incident, according to Cochran, who added that the witness was in possession of a valid carry conceal permit.

The victim, whose identity has not been released, was transferred to a regional hospital for treatment of stab wounds and her condition is not known.

Cochran said that while the investigation is in its preliminary stages, the attack appears to be an act of “random violence.” Cochran stated that police believe there is no known relationship between the alleged perpetrator and the victim. The chief further stated that there may be additional charges filed pending completion of the investigation.

Trapp was arraigned in Moffat County Court on Tuesday afternoon. Bond was set at $500,000. A protection order for the victim was issued in the event that bond is met.

A hearing is set for 1:15 p.m. July 30 in Moffat County.
