A fire in the city of Craig that began Sunday afternoon and prompted evacuation notices in the northeast section of the city is 100% contained, and all evacuation and pre-evacuation orders have been lifted, said the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office in a statement released on Monday afternoon.
The Thirteen Fire covered an estimated 35 acres, the sheriff’s office wrote. The cause is under investigation.
“At approximately 1:30 p.m., the Craig Regional Communications Center began receiving reports of a structure fire in the 700 block of East 13th Street,” the sheriff’s office wrote. “Craig Fire and Rescue, Craig Police Department, and the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office responded immediately.”
Four structures, including three on the property where the fire started – a house, garage and shed – were lost due to fire damage, said the sheriff’s office, as well as “another potential garage or shed” near East 12th Street and Pine Street.
“The fire quickly spread to nearby fields, transitioning into a fast-moving wildland-urban interface fire,” the department said in the statement.
The Thirteen Fire elicited a “significant multi-agency response,” said the department, including resources from the West Routt Fire Protection District, Hayden Police Department, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Bureau of Land Management Fire, U.S. Forest Service Fire Resources and the City of Craig Road and Bridge Department, among others.
“Specialized firefighting resources” included a Boise Helitack type-one helicopter, two Moffat County Sheriff’s Office wildland engines, one type-four BLM engine, two single-engine air tankers, and several apparatuses from Craig Fire and Rescue and West Routt Fire.
“Two Craig Fire & Rescue firefighters were transported to Memorial Regional Health for evaluation due to smoke inhalation and heat-related fatigue,” the statement said. “Both were released after treatment.”
No other injuries have been reported at this time.
Just after 2 p.m. on Sunday, the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office issued a mandatory evacuation notice on the department’s Facebook page for the area stretching from 13th to 9th streets between Bryan Way and Washington Street in Craig.
“If you are in the area of the fire you need to leave NOW. You are blocking emergency response and putting life and property at risk!” the sheriff’s office wrote in the post.
Less than an hour later, officials issued a pre-evacuation notice for the area to the north of East 9th street from Bryan Way to Haughey Road.
Just after 3 p.m., a reporter near the scene observed aircraft, including a helicopter carrying a load of water, in the area of the fire. At around 4 p.m. Sunday, the sheriff’s office announced that all areas previously under mandatory evacuation were being moved into pre-evacuation notice.
The department said in a Facebook post at 10 p.m. Sunday that the fire was “under control” and that all evacuation and pre-evacuation orders were lifted.
“The cause of the fire remains under investigation,” the department wrote in its Monday statement. “Due to the extent of suppression efforts, determining an exact cause may be difficult.”
