The Colorado Department of Revenue is warning Colorado residents of a text-based scam targeting state taxpayers, according to a news release.
The text messages often ask individuals for banking information so they can receive their tax refund, and mention the consequences of not responding by the deadline.
Coloradans are urged to ignore the texts and avoid clicking any links within them. Similar messages in other states have led people to fraudulent websites designed to appear legitimate with the aim of stealing personal and banking information, states the news release.
“The Colorado Department of Revenue will never send unexpected text messages requesting personal information or banking updates,” continues the news release. “If you receive such a text, please report it to StopFraudColorado.gov.”
