On Tuesday, authorities released the names of the Craig police officer and Moffat County sheriff’s deputy who fired their weapons Friday in the fatal shooting of a man who was reportedly brandishing a handgun.

Additionally, the Moffat County Coroner’s Office has identified the man as 27-year-old Jesus Fuentes Vega of Craig. The coroner’s office reported that Vega died of multiple gunshot wounds, and a toxicological examination has been performed with the results pending.

The Craig Police Department and Moffat County Sheriff’s Office identified the police officer involved in the shooting as Nathan Baker and the deputy as Conner Pogline.

According to a news release, Baker has been a Craig police officer for 19 months and has 17 years of law enforcement experience. He was previously employed as a deputy with the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office and as a police officer in Rangely.

Pogline has served with the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office since 2022, graduating from the training academy in December 2023.

According to the release, Baker and Pogline both discharged their duty weapons when Vega was shot and killed. The release did not say how many shots were fired or where the man was shot.

Baker and Pogline are on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

The release said the two law enforcement officers will remain on paid leave until the conclusion of an internal review, which is being conducted separately from the ongoing investigation being led by the 14th Judicial District Critical Incident Team.

According to information previously released by Craig police and the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office, officers with the departments were dispatched to 925 W. First St. in Craig at about 9:40 p.m. Friday on a report of a man with a handgun.

Authorities reported that, upon arriving at the address, a police officer and sheriff’s deputy were confronted by a man with a handgun and the man was shot.

Police said law enforcement personnel rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived on scene. Vega was taken to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
