Steamboat Springs — Routt County residents can now renew most vehicle registrations on the Web.

Routt County Clerk and Recorder Kay Weinland has announced that Routt County is one of nine counties in Colorado to offer online registration renewal for most vehicles, through a program operated by the Colorado Department of Revenue. Routt joins Boulder, Denver, Douglas, El Paso, Jefferson, Larimer and Pueblo on the list of counties participating in the program, which requires vehicle owners to enter only their license plate number.

“It’s so slick,” Weinland said of the program. “It’s a huge customer service.”

A small processing fee does apply to online renewal transactions, which cannot be completed for renewals that involve a changed address or updated information.

“They can only renew the registration as it is,” Weinland said.

Diesel vehicles, such as farm vehicles, also are not eligible for the online program, she added. A complete list of noneligible vehicles can be viewed on the Web site, http://www.Colorado.gov/renewplates.

Vehicle owners should allow 10 business days for by-mail delivery of registration documents and renewal tabs, after renewing their registration online.

“More than 2.5 million registered vehicles are now potentially eligible for the online registration option,” Gov. Bill Ritter said in a press release. “This latest technology is part of our larger plan to enhance services to the public while improving efficiencies within state government.”

Many Colorado residents already are using the service.

“Since the launch of the Online Vehicle Registration Renewal Service, there have been approximately 22,900 plates renewed online,” said Roxy Huber, executive director of the Colorado Department of Revenue. “This online service has : benefited counties by reducing paperwork and shortening lines in county motor vehicle offices.”
