Steamboat Pilot & Today announces change in leadership
Swift Communications, the owner of the Steamboat Pilot & Today and the Craig Press, has announced a change in leadership at the newspapers.
Bonnie Stewart has been the publisher for both newspapers since December 2021, but her position has been eliminated as of Friday, according to Scott Stanford, group publisher for Swift Communications and a former editor and publisher at the Steamboat Pilot & Today.
Nicole Miller, publisher of the Summit Daily News, will take on the publisher role for the Steamboat Pilot & Today effectively immediately. Rob Galloway, publisher of Swift’s two newspapers in the Lake Tahoe region of California, will take over for the Craig Press.
Stanford praised Stewart’s work, saying she was a “true professional,” adding that the change in leadership was “necessitated by financial conditions.”
“The most important thing we can do for each community we serve is ensure that we can deliver a newspaper there for many years to come,” Stanford said. “This change meets that mission by adjusting staffing to reflect changes in revenue.”
The move aligns the Steamboat Pilot & Today with a similarly sized newspaper led by a publisher with a long history in Steamboat.
Miller started at the Steamboat Pilot & Today in 2006 as a copy editor and page designer. She spent seven years working in various roles on the news side of the business before heading to Steamboat Ski Resort to run the ski area’s social media channels. She returned to the Pilot in 2018 as digital editor before taking an opportunity to lead the Summit Daily News as editor the following year. In 2022, she was named as Summit’s publisher.
“I’ve lived in Steamboat longer than I’ve lived anywhere, so this change feels like coming home,” Miller said. “I’m excited to get back into the community I love and return to working with some longtime Steamboat Pilot colleagues.”
Under Galloway, Craig moves into a group of similarly sized newspapers including The Tahoe Tribune, The Sierra Sun, The Sky Hi News, the Glenwood Springs Post Independent and the Rifle Citizen-Telegram. Galloway has been in the newspaper industry for 25 years, 20 of those with Swift Communications (Craig Press’ parent company).
“While change is hard, I understand the importance of news outlets in the markets they serve and will make every effort to continue Craig’s presence in the community.” he added.
