Bud Werner Library will host a meet and greet with Ranger, Steamboat’s new Keep Bears Wild ambassador dog, at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 9.

Ranger is a Karelian bear dog, which have long been bred to mitigate human-bear conflict alongside their human partner. The breed helps teach bears to avoid people.

Keep Bears Wild works to establish sustainable and effective bear awareness in the community to help reduce conflict between humans and bears.

Attendees can meet Ranger in Library Hall, stay for a free talk about the work of Karelian bear dogs and hear tips on how people can better coexist with bears in the Yampa Valley. The event offers the opportunity to learn what is currently working well in the local community to cohabitate with bears, where problem spots are arising and how the community can do better in coping with the issue.
