Howelsen Hill Ski Area will close out its 110th winter season a bit earlier than usual on Sunday, March 22, inviting the community to celebrate Closing Day with a mix of free skiing, live music, food and festivities, according to a statement released on Monday.
The season’s final Ski Free Sunday will run from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., giving locals a last chance to enjoy Steamboat’s historic ski hill before it wraps for the winter season. Free lift tickets will be available at the ticket office.
Closing Day arrives about a week earlier than last year’s celebration, which was held on March 30.
Although this winter was marked by lower snowfall and warmer temperatures, the Howelsen Hill team kept the slopes accessible throughout the season through grooming, lift maintenance and snowmaking.
“Despite the challenges that came with a lighter snow year, our mountain crews did an incredible job keeping the hill operating and the experience fun for the community,” said Howelsen Hill Ski and Rodeo Manager Brad Setter in the statement.
“Howelsen Hill really shines as a hometown ski area — it proves there’s more to a great ski hill than simply the amount of snow,” he continued. “It’s about community, tradition and the people who make the experience special.”
Festivities will continue throughout the afternoon at the base area near the Howelsen Hill Lodge with DJ Rocksteady Teddy. Guests are encouraged to show off their creative side by dressing in colorful costumes.
While the traditional pond skim won’t be part of this year’s lineup, fun jumps and rails are expected to be set up near the base for skiers and riders looking to showcase their best tricks and compete for prizes from local sponsors including HVNLY DAZE, Zirkel Optics, Yampa River Icehouse and Howelsen Hill.
Tube Howelsen will be open for one final day, offering 50% off all tubing sessions. Guests are encouraged to call in advance to make a reservation or book online.
The Outrun Snack Bar will serve all-day happy hour specials, including discounted drinks and bites like pretzels, brats and burgers.
Due to changing weather conditions and anticipated warm temperatures, what activities will be available on Closing Day will be fully determined later this week. More information is at SteamboatSprings.net/Ski.
