As the 2024-25 winter season draws to a close, Steamboat Springs’ iconic Howelsen Hill will host a festive closing day on Sunday, March 30.

“Mother Nature was again on our side this year. Tube Howelsen had another successful slide, and the hill hosted more than 50 on-snow races and events,” said Howelsen Hill Ski & Rodeo Manager Brad Setter in a statement

The celebration includes the final “Ski Free Sunday,” where visitors can enjoy free skiing and riding from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. by claiming a free ticket at the ticket office.

Additionally, the Rat Lake Pond Skim Competition returns for its third year, running from noon to 2 p.m. Participants must register in advance, sign a waiver and pay a $5 entry fee, which supports the Endowment Fund.

Registration opens March 16, with prizes awarded for the best skims and costumes. The Outrun Snack Bar will offer special food and drink deals throughout the day, including burgers, brats and discounted beverages, as well as live music and yard games.

Howelsen Hill Ski Area, owned by the city, has been a foundation of the community since 1915, serving as a training ground for numerous Olympic athletes and members of the Colorado and National Ski Halls of Fame.
