The town of Oak Creek is seeking a municipal judge after their former judge, Jessica Ryan, resigned last month, according to Town Administrator Louis Fineberg.

The position — pursuant to C.R.S. 13-101-105 — begins with an initial two-year term, with salary negotiable and no benefits, states the request for proposals.

“Preference shall be given by the Board of Trustees of the Town of Oak Creek, as the appointing authority, to the appointment of a municipal judge, who is admitted to the practice of law in Colorado, but admission to the practice of law in Colorado shall not be a requirement for appointment,” states the RFP.

“The desired candidate will be familiar with the operation of municipal courts in Colorado,” the RFP adds.

The Municipal Court hears offenses pertaining to the town’s municipal code, including traffic, code enforcement, land use, nuisances and other misdemeanors. The judge may occasionally present to the trustee board with recommended costs and fees for the board’s consideration by resolution.

Municipal court is typically held one per month. While the appointed judge is required to be available for needs outside the courtroom, the total time per month anticipated outside the courtroom is one hour.

In an interview with the newspaper, Fineberg said that the town’s recent efforts to overhaul code enforcement and “clean up” Oak Creek are delayed until they can appoint a judge.

Interested applicants should submit a resume and letter of interest to Fineberg by email at townadmin@townofoakcreek.com or by mail to the following address: Louis Fineberg, Town Administrator, Town of Oak Creek, P.O. Box 128, Oak Creek, CO 80467.

Selected applicants will be interviewed. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the board appoints a judge, and the position will be effective immediately upon appointment.
