North Routt Community Charter School middle-school English Language Arts and science teacher Melanie Walker has been chosen as one of 21 semifinalists for the 2027 Colorado Teacher of the Year award, according to a Wednesday statement from the Colorado Department of Education.

Walker’s nomination was among nearly 300 applicants across the state from 18 different school districts. She is the sole nominee from the Yampa Valley.

The application process included a submitted video, short-answer questions and a recommendation from the school’s supervisor, according to Head of School Bill Gallagher.

The semifinalists will move on to the second part of the application process, which includes additional essay questions.

“We are fortunate to have such talented and dedicated educators serving students across Colorado,” said Education Commissioner Susana Córdova in the statement. “These semifinalists reflect the passion, creativity and commitment that define our profession, and we are excited to celebrate the impact they are making in schools and communities throughout the state.”

Walker, a mentor teacher and member of the school’s leadership committee, holds a bachelor’s degree in education from Ohio University, Athens and a master’s degree in teaching and learning: curriculum and instruction from Nova Southeastern University, according to her biography on the Colorado Department of Education’s award semifinalist page.

“Ms. Melanie (Walker) deserves this recognition for her ability to inspire her middle school students to become life-long learners imbued with the character traits of North Routt Community Charter School,” said Gallagher in an email to the NRCCS community.

“She is an excellent educator in every respect,” he added, noting her “superb record of teaching and well-deserved recognition.”

Finalist candidates will be named in September and the overall awardee for Colorado Teacher of the Year will be announced in October. The winners from each state will gather in Washington, D.C. thereafter for a national recognition ceremony.
