The LiftUp Food Bank in Steamboat Springs is scheduled to be demolished in the coming weeks as the organization prepares for a June groundbreaking of its planned expansion, according to a Tuesday news release.
Food bank services at the current location will close at 3 p.m. on Monday, June 1, and will be temporarily relocated June 2 and 3 to 1880 Loggers Lane, Unit D in Steamboat Springs. The new location will be open on Thursday, June 4 at 11 a.m.
LiftUp Executive Director Sue Fegelein told the newspaper that no exact date has been set yet for the demolition.
Over the past ten years, LiftUp’s food bank service demand has increased by 67%. Due to current space constraints, only seven people can be in the food bank at a time.
The organization’s Donation Center faces similar issues, frequently overflowing beyond its capacity and limiting the number of products that can be transported to the Thrift Store. The expansion would nearly double the current space and put all of the organization’s operations into one building.
LiftUp launched a $5.5 million capital campaign in the fall to help fund the expansion. According to the Tuesday release, the nonprofit is now just over $1 million shy of its goal, in part thanks to a $2.5 million “challenge grant.”
