The Bud Werner Library in Steamboat Springs will present a free screening of “Maya and the Wave,” winner of the People’s Choice Award at Toronto International Film Festival, at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Library Hall.
The film focuses on Maya Gabeira, a big wave surfer from Brazil. She set records in 2020 when she surfed the tallest wave a woman has ever surfed after she nearly drowned a short time earlier in Portugal.
Gaberia had to fight for recognition of the achievement after receiving pushback from other competitive male surfers. Neither the World Surf League or the Guinness Book of World Records had a category established to celebrate the accomplishment, so Gabeira began a campaign to change that.
The film is packed with plenty of surfing action, but equality, strength and bravery are at the heart of this documentary.
