Routt County to host gun safety events, offer free firearm storage to residents
Routt County is promoting safe gun ownership and responsible gun practices through a series of free gun safe distribution events throughout June, hosted by Routt County Public Health.
The events will aim to provide local households with firearm storage options and valuable safety resources.
“We want to empower our community to take simple steps that can save lives,” said Routt County Public Health Director Roberta Smith in a statement. “Whether you’re a first-time gun owner, a veteran, or a parent with young kids, secure firearm storage is one of the most effective ways to protect your household.”
The first event will be held noon-3 p.m. Friday in the Routt County Community Room at 613 Oak St.
Routt County Public Health will be at the Steamboat Springs Farmers Market from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, then the Oak Creek Farmers Market from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday.
The last event will be held at the Hayden Farmers Market from 5-8 p.m. June 26.
Available gun safes include lock box safes, biometric safes and rifle cases. Distribution is limited to one safe per household and is open to Routt and Moffat county residents.
“Safety is a shared responsibility,” said Routt County Sheriff Doug Scherar. “Being able to give away gun safes for free makes it easier for families to make safe choices when it comes to firearm storage.”
